PALM DESERT, Calif. — Tom Gueant shot an opening-round 64 Friday to help the Oregon men's golf team take the early team lead at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club.

Gueant's 8-under on the par-72 7,305-yard course gave him a two-shot lead over Cal State Northirdge's Mats Ege.

Oregon's Nate Stember shot a 70 to tie for 14th place and Kevin Geniza is in a logjam of players tied for 20th at 71.

That helped add up to a 10-under 278 for the Ducks to give them a one-shot lead over Charlotte and a two-shot lead over Auburn in the 21-team race. Boise State sits fourth at 285 with North Texas another shot back in fifth place.
