Aharon Modlin hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning as Pepperdine rallied past Oregon 8-5 Sunday afternoon at Tempe Diablo Stadium.
Oregon scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-1 lead before the Waves scored three times in the sixth inning. The Ducks were two outs from victory before Modlin’s homer off reliever Christian Ciuffetelli put Pepperdine (3-0) into the lead.
Oregon fell to 0-3 under new coach Mark Wasikowski, a Pepperdine graduate.
Tanner Smith had two hits and two RBIs for the Ducks while Gabe Mathews had two RBIs.
After Pepperdine scored a run off UO starter Robert Ahlstrom in the first inning, Oregon tied the game in the second when Anthony Hall was hit by a pitch and reached third when Aaron Zavala reached on an error. Jack Scanlon hit a sacrifice fly to score Hall.
Scanlan walked with one out in the fourth before Gavin Grant and Sam Novitske were each hit by a pitch. Smith and Matthews each hit a two-run single to put Oregon ahead 5-1.
Ahlstrom allowed four earned runs in 5 2/3 innings. Kenyon Yovan allowed a run in the sixth before Hunter Breault tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings.
