MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Oregon senior Edwin Yi will participate in the men’s NCAA Golf Championships as an individual but the Ducks were unable to advance as a team after a seventh-place finish at the Myrtle Beach Regional.
Yi, the individual runner-up, shot a 6-under 66 in the final round Wednesday at TPC Myrtle Beach.
Heading into the final day tied for the lead, Yi made back-to-back birdies at seven and eight and shot a bogey-free 3-under 33 on the front nine. After a bogey at 10 dropped him back to 2 under, the senior birdied four of his final six holes, including 17 and 18 to finish at 14 under for the tournament, one shot back of Illinois’ Michael Feagles.
Yi fended off Jamie Li of Florida State, who finished 11 under, for the individual berth into the NCAA Championships.
“I am so happy for Edwin,” Oregon coach Casey Martin said in a news release. “He has worked so and been such a great player for Oregon. I'm happy that his season will continue in Arkansas."
Senior Ryan Gronlund and freshmen Yin Ho-Yue and Craig Ronne finished tied for 43rd at 5 over.
Oregon finished 1 under as a team, which was seven shots off the pace to qualify for the NCAA championships.
Illinois (25 under) won the tournament with Ohio State (20 under), Wake Forest (15 under), California (14 under) and UNLV (8 under) also advancing to the compete for a national title in Fayetteville, Ark., later this month.
"The team side was disappointing to me,” Martin said. “We couldn't get over the hump this spring and have that breakthrough event. But we will regroup and be back next year with something to prove."
Oregon State finished the three-day, 54-hole tournament in 11th place at 18 over in the 14-team field. Spencer Tibbetts was the top Beaver, carding a 2-over 218 to finish in a tie for 31st place. Kyosuke Hara (4 over) tied for 35th and Shawn Lu (5 over) tied for 43rd.
