It didn’t take coach Mario Cristobal and his staff long to execute Plan B in their search for a 2020 quarterback.

DJ Uiagalelei, the top-ranked prospect in the class, chose Clemson over Oregon on Sunday.

That opened the door for Jay Butterfield, a four-star recruit from Brentwood, Calif., who verbally committed to the Ducks on Friday night.

“I am excited for what my future holds at THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON,” Butterfield posted on social media.

The 6-foot-6, 202-pound Butterfield is expected to compete with Tyler Shough and Cale Millen for the starting job when the post-Justin Herbert era begins.

Butterfield is the eighth known non-binding commitment for Oregon in the cycle. As a junior at Liberty High, he passed for 3,294 yards with 43 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

The Ducks’ class is ranked No. 1 among Pac-12 programs and 12th nationally by 247Sports.
