LOS ANGELES — Oregon hit two home runs late in the game and then held on to knock off No. 1 UCLA, 4-3, on Friday in a Pac-12 softball game at Easton Stadium.
Trailing 2-0 heading into the sixth inning, the Ducks (17-19, 2-8 Pac-12) scored their first run on an RBI double by Jasmine Sievers that scored Haley Cruse. Next up was April Utecht who launched Oregon into the lead with a two-run homer to left field.
Rachel Cid then led off seventh with a homer to right center to put the Ducks up 4-2.
The Bruins (35-2, 9-1) pulled with a run on a solo homer by Bubba Nickles with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Pinch hitter Rachel Garcia followed with a single to keep UCLA alive but Oregon pitcher Jordan Dail stayed composed and struck out Aaliyah Jordon swinging to end the game.
Dail (14-8) allowed six hits four walks and had 12 strikeouts as she went the distance for the Ducks, who won for the fifth time in their last seven games.
Game 2 of the three-game series will be played Saturday at 7 p.m.
