LUBBOCK, Texas — Freshmen Aaron Zavala and Tanner Smith each had three hits as Oregon opened the baseball season with a 9-4 win at eighth-ranked Texas Tech on Friday afternoon.
Zavala, the designated hitter, had two doubles and scored twice and Smith had two runs and two RBIs. Junior shortstop Spencer Steer and junior outfielder Taylor Adams each added two hits for the Ducks, who had 15 hits.
After Texas Tech, which made the College World Series last year, got a run off UO starter Kenyon Yovan in the first inning, Oregon scored three runs in both the third and fourth innings to take a 6-1 lead.
Smith singled and Jonny DeLuca walked in the third before Steer singled in Smith. Gabe Matthews followed with a two-run double.
Zavala singled to lead off the fourth inning and scored on a double by Max Foxcroft. Smith walked and Sam Novitske was hit by a pitch before DeLuca singled in Foxcroft.
Steer followed with a sacrifice fly.
Yovan allowed one run in two innings before being relieved by North Eugene graduate Robert Ahlstrom, who gave up two runs in the fourth inning. Ahlstrom picked up the win by allowing four hits in three innings.
Oregon followed with two runs in the fifth as Zavala doubled and Adams singled. Smith and Novitske each followed with run-scoring singles to put UO ahead 8-3.
Adams singled and stole second in the seventh inning before Smith singled him home.
Sophomore reliever Brett Walker allowed one run in two innings. Christian Ciuffetelli tossed a scoreless inning before Nico Tellache pitched the ninth.
Oregon State 6, New Mexico 5
At Surprise, Ariz., freshman Greg Fuchs hit a two-run pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth inning to cap the comeback for No. 10 Oregon State in its season opener.
Fuchs singled home Beau Philip and Adley Rutschman as the Beavers scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to edge the Lobos.
Jake Dukart opened the bottom of the ninth with a double and scored on a Rutschman single to make it 5-4. Philip followed with a single and Tyler Malone walked to load the bases, setting the stage for Fuchs' game-winning hit.
Oregon State trailed 4-0 before scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh. New Mexico added a run in the ninth for a 5-3 lead.
Alex McGarry had a two-run single in the seventh for the Beavers. Philip scored twice as the Beavers outhit the Lobos, 6-5.
