Some coaches seek out tournaments in Hawaii, Florida or the Virgin Islands during November.
Kelly Graves didn’t look at the weather forecast when he scheduled Oregon’s nonconference slate.
One week after returning from a 115-36 win at Alaska Fairbanks, the Ducks left to play at Utah State at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Oregon (2-0) remained No. 3 in the Associated Press poll following a come-from-behind 75-73 home win over 18th-ranked Syracuse on Saturday.
“We learned and that is why you play good teams early,” Graves said. “Now we have some things we know we need to work on. We know what we are and what we aren’t.”
One of the concerns that came out of the win over Syracuse was a 42-18 deficit on points in the paint. Graves credited some of the Orange’s success at the basket to Oregon center Ruthy Hebard playing sick after returning from her homecoming trip to Alaska.
The Ducks were 11-for-31 on three-pointers against Syracuse.
“We are among the best shooting teams in the country, but we just didn’t shoot it that well,” Graves said.
Erin Boley, the lone new starter for the Ducks, was 3-for-12 on three-pointers.
“She’s going to have some nights like that, but what I like about her is that she finds other ways to score,” Graves said. “She had a couple of opportunities around the rim that just didn’t go. There are going to be nights when she gets us 30 or 35. She’s a great weapon to have.”
Boley had 13 points, four assists, two rebounds and one steal in her home debut for the Ducks after sitting out last year when she transferred from Notre Dame.
“I am going in with the mindset to bring whatever I can to the lineup,” Boley said. “I want to come in and contribute in any way I can. It’s not every night you are going to shoot the lights out so I came in wanting to contribute in any way I could.”
Utah State (2-0) went 7-23 last season, but opened the season with a 72-61 win at Washington State. Junior forward Hailey Bassett-Meacham was named Mountain West Conference player of the week after averaging 20.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in wins over the Cougars and Northern New Mexico.
