SURPRISE, Ariz. — Oregon's Thomas Laurent advanced to the second round of men's singles play after defeating Alex Brown of Illinois on Wednesday's opening day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Fall Championships.

The Duck senior, the fifth seed, defeated Brown 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 and will face Ewan Moore of Tulane on Thursday in the 64-player field.

Fellow Duck Emmanuel Costa didn't fare as well in his first-round singles match against No. 11 Jan Zielinski of Georgia, falling 6-1, 7-5. Costa will play Rrezart Cungu of Wake Forest on Thursday in the consolation bracket.

Later Wednesday, Laurent teamed with Joshua Charlton in doubles competition where they lost against Tim Ruehl and Andrea Bolla of Arizona State, 6-2, 6-4, 10-5. The Duck duo will play the No. 2-seeded team of Sven Lah and Jimmy Bendeck of Baylor, an upset victim of Washington, in the consolation bracket
