Miranda Elish, Lauren Burke transferred to Texas to play for former UO coach Mike White
The Oregon softball program has lost another prominent player.
Mary Iakopo, the heir apparent to Gwen Svekis at catcher, has decided to transfer after finishing an impressive freshman campaign with eight home runs an 37 RBIs.
The Register-Guard confirmed Iakopo’s departure after it was first reported on Tuesday by FloSoftball.
Oregon already released ace pitcher Miranda Elish and hometown star Lauren Burke, who both transferred to Texas to play for former coach Mike White.
Iakopo, a second-team all-Pac-12 selection, hit .306 in 62 games last season. She was the only remaining catcher on first-year coach Melyssa Lombardi’s 2019 roster.
Svekis graduated after leading the Pac-12 champion Ducks with 17 home runs and 60 RBIs as a senior.
Elish posted a 37-2 record with a 1.42 earned-run average over the past two seasons at Oregon. As a sophomore, the former No. 1 overall high school recruit threw a perfect game against Portland State and pitched two games in the Women’s College World Series.
Burke, a prep all-American at Marist High standout, batted .351 with three home runs and 17 RBIs in 36 games as a true freshman. She had pinch-hit home runs against Albany and Drake during the NCAA Regional at Jane Sanders Stadium.
Lombardi still inherits Pac-12 pitcher of the year Megan Kleist and an experienced outfield led by rising star Shannon Rhodes.
The Ducks, who went 8-0 and outscored the opposition 114-2 during the fall exhibition season, begin the new era at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., on Feb. 8.
