LOS ANGELES — Solomon Bates pitched seven shutout innings, and No. 2 Oregon State managed only five hits in an 8-0 loss to USC in a Pac-12 baseball game on Sunday at Dedeaux Stadium.
The loss pushed the Beavers 2½ games behind Stanford in the conference standings with three games remaining in the season. The Cardinal finished off a sweep of Washington State with a 4-2 victory on Sunday. Oregon State was going for its first-ever sweep of the Trojans.
Blake Sabol went 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs for USC (25-25, 12-18 Pac-12), and Lars Nootbaar drove in two runs. USC broke open a scoreless game with three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Bates kept Oregon State off-balance all day, striking out eight before giving way to Connor Lunn.
Adley Rutschman had two hits for the Beavers (42-9, 18-8), who will finish the season with a three-game series against UCLA beginning Sunday at Goss Stadium.
